SAN ANTONIO – A man is back on dry land after spending the night trapped along the banks of the San Antonio river.

Rescue crews found the 22-year-old in a rugged area, not far from Interstate 37 and Loop 1604 on the city’s far Southeast Side.

San Antonio police say that man had been with a group of friends who went to the river late Wednesday night.

They say he and another man wandered off on their own to wade in the water and fish, but they got lost.

The rest of the group later became concerned when the pair didn’t return and called for help.

At some point, police say, one man found his way back to the group and told rescuers where to find the other man, who was too exhausted to climb out of the rugged area on his own.

Firefighters launched a boat, then police directed them to the man from their helicopter overhead.

After they rescued him, crews struggled to find a place along the river where they could exit with their boat.

Police say they planned to use an area along a private farm.

They say the man suffered only minor cuts on his feet.

Family members who showed up at the rescue scene told KSAT12 they were relieved that he was safe, but also tired, themselves, from being up all night.
