SIOUX FALLS, S.D. The inaugural acrobatics and tumbling signing class has officially been announced for head coach Kaelyn Cowan. After four months of recruiting, she still has more work to do, but finally gets to see some of her hard work pay off after the official announcement on Nov. 10.
Cowan has announced 17 signees to the program. Six from South Dakota, three from Texas, two from Illinois, and one from Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Georgia, Minnesota and Colorado.
Her recruiting adventures sound like a Johnny Cash song.
"I have been to Texas because that's just home and I know a lot of gyms there," Cowan said. "I've been around South Dakota a lot, from [Sioux Falls] to Brookings, to Rapid City, to Madison, to Mitchell, all of those places. I'm actually going to Minnesota next week, and I've been to Nebraska a lot too."
The recruiting process is different for Cowan, not only has she been trying to promote Augustana to athletes, but she has to promote an entirely new sport for them to compete in.
"What I've been doing… I started out on the road, and I've just been educating," she said. "That took a little bit to just get everyone to kind of know what our program is going to be and what the sport is."
Cowan has emphasized the importance of Augustana being able to show itself to the athletes to reel them in. A lot of athletes have been given the opportunity to see the school.
"I think the last time I checked, I've had 28 visits in the last couple of weeks, with more to come," she said. "Letting them get on campus and letting Augustana be Augustana has been super helpful. The school really sells itself."
And when she's not recruiting, she's preparing for recruiting.
"Calling all the different food places and getting all of the administrative work done," she said. "Then, getting ready for the 2023 recruiting class, because that's going to come before we know it."
Once her student-athletes get on campus, Cowan will have to work from the ground up to teach a new sport.
"We'll start in the fall with drills, just drills, drills, drills from the basics, then we'll slowly build-up," she said. "Everyone is getting an introduction into what the sport is because even in college versus the club-level, it is still completely different."
It won't be long before the group of athletes step foot on campus. Cowan is excited and feels good about how her first core of athletes shape up.
"This class has just been so studious," she said. "That's going to be so helpful here at Augustana. They've also been so excited from the beginning to help start this program, so I'm really excited to get this group of women together to pioneer the sport and this program."
