At noon on Monday, Aug. 23, the Wareham Fire Department was called to a motor vehicle accident involving a “tractor-trailer on its side” on Rte. 25 West, near the exit to Rte. 195, according to a department press release. The driver — who had been trapped in the vehicle — sustained unknown injuries and was flown to Rhode Island Hospital by helicopter for treatment.
Fire Chief Matthew Rowley, and Engine One responded to the call from headquarters on Main Street. Captain Colin Kelley along with Firefighters Chris McIntosh, Josh Dessert, and Evan Moretti staffed the engine company. In addition, off-duty career firefighters and on-call members were alerted to respond as well.
On the way to the scene, the department learned that the truck driver was trapped and would need to be extricated from the vehicle. At that point, the department’s Rescue One team, responded with Captains Chris Smith, Chip Deblois, Jim Brandolini, along with Firefighters Andrew Rowley and Ralph Braley.
It took about an hour for the Fire Department crews to complete what the press release described as “a very involved extrication” and free the driver, before transferring the driver to the care of Wareham EMS.
“This was a difficult extrication not only because of the heat and humidity but by the way the operator was pinned in the vehicle,” Rowley said.
While responding to the initial crash, standby Wareham Fire Department crews responded to five other calls. Fire alarm operator Karen Metell coordinated the response to those additional calls.
At nearly 2 p.m., a second crash occurred on Rte. 25. Three vehicles were involved, and the crash caused multiple “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to the press release. Three people were transported to Tobey Hospital, and another person was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital.
Wareham Fire Department secured hazards on the damaged vehicles and assisted Wareham EMS with patient care on the scene.
