It’s very nearly that time of year, folks, where BYU Football is back, and all is right with the world. The Cougars will play in the inaugural ‘Vegas Kickoff Classic’ over Labor Day Weekend against the Arizona Wildcats in the new Allegiant Stadium (home of the Las Vegas Raiders).
We reached out to long-time friend of Cougars on Cougars and long-time Las Vegas resident, Pat Hammond (aka @crzycougfanatic), to ask for suggestions on what to do and eat in the area, as we know that a lot of you are taking advantage of the long weekend to travel to support BYU.
Let us know in the comments if you are headed to Sin City, if you do or eat any of the things recommended in the article, or if you have any additional suggestions! (DISCLAIMER: We are still in the midst of a global pandemic. We’ve made the suggestions, but plz don’t blame us if places are closed, have different hours, require masks, etc.)
Things to do:
- Area 15 “Mega Mart” — “AREA15 is an immersive playground, all rolled into a vast and vibrant space. Throw an axe, wander through a bamboo volcano, race on a zip line, or explore other mesmerizing realms. From the futuristic to the thrill-seeking, there’s an experience for everyone here.” I haven’t been but I have heard it is great and very unique.
- SeaQuest Las Vegas — Great for families. Boulevard Mall attraction featuring an aquarium with sharks and stingrays, plus birds & small animals. Be sure to buy food to feed the stingrays and other animals. Kids are $11.95 and adults are $17.95. Look for a Groupon for discounts or if you will be here for several days, check out the Las Vegas Pogo pass which is $40 on Groupon and grants you access several attractions around town, including the children’s museum which is also great. SeaQuest is the perfect size, not too big that it takes all day, but big enough that you feel like you saw something you don’t see everyday.
- Resorts World — Newest hotel, you can walk around and see shops and there are places to eat.
Bonus Thing to Do — BYU FanFest — At Craig Ranch Regional Park from 6 - 8 p.m. on Fri. Sept. 3. “Fans will have the opportunity to take pictures with Cosmo and the BYU Cheer Squad. There will also be face painting, balloon artists, inflatables and food trucks. The BYU Store and BYU concessions will be present.”
Places to eat:
- Yama Sushi — The best all you can eat sushi. The one on 3909 Spring Mountain is what Pat recommends.
- BabyStacks — Six locations around town. Best pancakes with any flavor you can imagine. Red Velvet, Bananas Foster, German Chocolate, also omelets. Crepes. Call ahead to check on in-restaurant dining.
- Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant — This is run by the family who worked at Macayo’s. Same great food, different name. Try a TCT a huge toasted cheese tortilla or try anything with the Baja sauce, a creamy white sauce that you could bathe in. So yummy.
A note from Mary and Jess: Our OG fans may remember that in 2017 we did an ‘Along the Trail’ segment for Las Vegas with Jess’s Aunt Lavinia. If you’re in the mood for a throwback, check out that episode here. Otherwise, we did the grunt work for you, and here are the Vegas recommendations that Lavinia made...
To do: Check out the arts district downtown. Start at Ogden or Stewart and go to 6th or 7th Ave. to see a variety of wall art that is continuously changing. Check out this ‘First Friday’ event on Fri. Sept. 3 in connection with that. Go to the Bellagio gardens! Thousands and thousands of beautiful, seasonal flowers — It’s free!
To eat: Pinkbox Doughnuts. It’s open 24 hours, so they’re are always fresh. Try the Fat Elvis. BabyStacks (If you’re paying attention, that’s a double recommendation, so you’ll definitely want to check that place out! Jess has tried it as well and highly recommends it.)
