Motorists in Allegheny Township will face another extended closure of a portion of Route 356 starting Wednesday.
PennDOT said Route 356 will be closed between Pleasant Hill and Piper roads. The section, used by about 10,000 motorists a day, is scheduled to reopen Sept. 30.
Signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closure. Crews will be rebuilding nearly 2,000 feet of the shoulder along the northbound side of the road and about 250 feet of the road itself. Crews also will be adding concrete pipe and installing walls on both sides of the pipe and new inlet boxes.
“There’s a drain pipe that runs underneath 356 and they’re replacing it as part of this project. The end walls provide support on both sides to the pipe,” said Jay Ofsanik, spokesman for PennDOT’s District 12, which includes Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette and Greene counties.
Ofsanik said the area is long overdue for the improvements.
The planned work is part of a larger $15.9 million project to improve Route 356 in the area. The work is scheduled to be done by October 2022.
The closure starting Wednesday comes on the heels of the closure of Route 356 between Pleasant Hill Road and the northwest section of Routes 356 and 56. That section closed July 19.
In a previous interview with the Tribune-Review, Allegheny Township Supervisor Ren Steele said the road closures are inconvenient, but necessary.
“This will be a pain, but to fix a major highway like this you have to be patient,” Steele said.
