BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - After Grace made landfall as a Category 3 major hurricane along the coast of Mexico near Tecolutla, Mexico, early Saturday morning, mountainous terrain has rapidly weakened the cyclone. Meanwhile, Henri has officially strengthened to hurricane status. Impacts to New England states begins Saturday evening.
HURRICANE HENRI
Henri continues to churn northward early this weekend. As of the 4pm update, the system has picked up speed after it was upgraded to a hurricane earlier this morning. A mix of Tropical Storm Warnings, Hurricane Warnings and Watches, and Storm Surge Warnings and Watches are now in effect for portions of southern New England.
Here is the latest information on Henri as of the Saturday afternoon update from the National Hurricane Center:
Location | Maximum Sustained Winds | Movement | Minimum Central Pressure |
---|---|---|---|
~ 335 miles S of Montauk Point, New York | 75 mph | NNE at 18 mph | 991 mb |
According to the National Hurricane Center, “dangerous storm surge inundation is expected to begin late tonight or Sunday in portions of Long Island, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern Massachusetts.” Hurricane conditions are expected to begin late tonight for those same areas. Hurricane-force winds extend 45 miles from the center of Henri. Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 150 miles outward.
Impacts from Henri could include dangerous storm surge, high winds, and heavy rainfall in the amounts of 3 to 6 inches over Long Island and New England Sunday into Monday, with localized totals upwards of 10 inches possible.
This is a storm worth monitoring very closely over the weekend, as it could be a significant situation for residents in the Northeast.
(ONCE HURRICANE, NOW) REMNANTS OF GRACE
Saturday afternoon’s 4pm advisory will be the last one issued (for now) on what was Hurricane, then Tropical Storm Grace as the elevated terrain has rapidly weakened the system.
Here is the latest information on Hurricane Grace as of the Saturday afternoon update from the National Hurricane Center:
Location | Maximum Sustained Winds | Movement | Minimum Central Pressure |
---|---|---|---|
~ 65 miles WNW of Ciudad de Mexico | 25 mph | W at 13 mph | 1002 mb |
Forecasters note that although Grace has dissipated, “its remnants will likely move into the eastern North Pacific by Sunday afternoon, where it is likely to develop into a new tropical cyclone next week.”
