If you’re planning a leisurely drive along the scenic Back Bay Drive, or if it is one of your go-to spots to jog or bike to connect with nature, you might want to plan accordingly.
Back Bay Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays for two weeks because of a rock slide that happened in late June at a private residence. The closure started on July 13, though the road and paths will be open for pedestrians and bicyclists on weekends and after 4 p.m. on weekdays. It will remain closed to vehicle traffic at all times.
The windy road lines the Upper Newport Bay, making up a section of the Back Bay Loop Trail that draws outdoor enthusiasts who seek to get away from the nearby urban bustle.
The 10.5 mile trail is known for its scenic stops at places such as Upper Castaways Park, the County of Orange’s Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, the new Back Bay Science Center at Shellmaker Island and Big Canyon.
The Back Bay Loop Trail also links with the 22-mile Mountains to Sea trail, which runs from Upper Newport Bay through Irvine past Peters Canyon Reservoir and into the rugged mountains of Weir Canyon north of Irvine Regional Park.
