TAMPA — A 61-year-old Tennessee man died when he drove head-on into another vehicle while attempting to pass on U.S. 301 north of Ranch Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The collision occurred at 2:11 p.m. Sunday.
The man from Kingston, Tenn., was headed south on U.S. 301 in a sport-utility vehicle when he entered the northbound lane in an attempt to pass traffic in front of him, the Highway Patrol said.
He collided with a northbound car driven by a 62-year-old man from Thonotosassa. The two vehicles spun around and came to rest on the shoulder of the southbound lane, the Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the car and a 27-year-old female passenger were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
All three individuals were wearing seatbelts.
The Highway Patrol did not identify the three because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a constitutional amendment passed by Florida voters in 2018. The law is meant to protect crime victims, but it deprives the public of information that had long been made available in Florida under the state’s public records law.
