STAMFORD — A fast moving squall generating strong winds and hail led to multiple calls from boaters for help in Stamford Harbor and Westcott Cove and Wallachs Point on Sunday.
At 4:54 p.m., 911 received several calls for assistance from people in row boats, kayaks and canoes.
A man and his nephew had to be rescued from Wallachs Point after they turned over their canoe and were stuck on the rocks. Stamford police and fire boats quickly got to the location and rescued them, said Stamford Fire Deputy Chief Tom Gloersen and Stamford Police Marine Sgt. Kevin Fitzgibbons.
Fitzgibbons said he estimated the winds were gusting to 40 to 50 mph during the fast moving squall that drifted from the north west to the east and over Darien.
Police received another distress call from two people in an orange kayak. The uncle in the green canoe said he saw two men in the orange kayak unable to paddle back to shore drift with the wind toward Darien.
Police, fire and Coast Guard vessels searched for the kayak into the night, but were unable to find anyone, Fitzgibbons said.
“The search continued pretty much all night and we don’t know if the two men got out all alone,” Fitzbibbons said.
Calls also came in as well for two people stranded on Flint Rocks in Stamford Harbor, whose boat got away from them in the storm.
Fitzgibbons said the row boaters were picked up and brought to shore.
Already this year one kayaker died after getting stuck in strong winds and waves off Wallachs Point and two others came close to losing their lives in the same place.
On April 26 Oscar Castillo, 22, of Danbury lost drowned when he took his wife kayaking off Wallachs Point. Three weeks later two adults had to be rescued when their kayaks turned over in rough waters.
