KALAMAZOO, MI - A storm Friday evening packing strong winds and heavy rain appeared to cause the greatest damage along the I-94 corridor from west of Kalamazoo to the Jackson area, according to the National Weather Service.
Crews with Consumers Energy and other utilities were busy Saturday, June 27, restoring electricity to thousands left without service.
The hardest hit area appeared to be Van Buren County in Southwest Michigan, with considerable tree damage reported and some structural damage. Jackson County also had damage from numerous downed trees.
Just before noon Saturday, Consumers Energy was reporting about 1,800 customers in Van Buren County without service and Indiana Michigan Power reported about 5,200 without service. The two companies serve different portions of the county.
Indiana Michigan Power also reported about 5,800 customers without electricity farther south in Berrien County.
Jackson County had about 2,900 customers without service, Kalamazoo County was at 806 and Calhoun County was at 395, according to Consumers Energy.
The storm came with heavy rain for parts of Michigan. An area between Lansing and Jackson was hardest hit, with Eaton Rapids reporting 3.84 inches and Leslie with 3.35 inches.
In Jackson County, residents were out Saturday cleaning up.
Jack Vincent, a farm owner in Hanover, was cutting up a huge old maple tree.
Vincent said he knew that county road workers would have their hands full so he and his neighbor moved the tree off the road and off his fence.
