LEEDS, Utah — A new wildfire has broken out near Leeds in Washington County, forcing the closure of I-15. Residents of Harrisburg and those west of I-15 in Leeds have been ordered to evacuate, as well as the Red Cliffs Campground.
The Cottonwood Trail Fire started Sunday afternoon near southbound I-15 at Exit 27. It was originally estimated to be 1,000 acres in size and growing, according to officials.

Wind gusts up to 15-20 miles per hour caused the fire to jump the freeway.
The blaze reportedly grew to 3,000 acres around 6:30 p.m.
Officials warned drivers of a travel delay as I-15 was closed in both directions.
Northbound I-15 lanes reopened around 7:15 p.m., but southbound lanes remained closed with a two-hour travel delay.

The fire jumped the freeway and into the median, eventually crossing over to Old Highway 91 near Harrisburg. Old Highway 91 was also closed.
Videos showed cars turning around in Harrisville to escape the flames.

Officials said some structures are being threatened.
Evacuation orders were issued for residents in Harrisburg and those west of I-15 in Leeds. The Red Cliffs Campground was also evacuated.
The Harrisburg evacuations were lifted just before 8:20 p.m.

The American Red Cross of Utah said a cooling and evacuation center was opened at Washington County Fairgrounds located at 5500 West and 339 South in Hurricane to assist those affected by the fire.
