New Jersey tattoo parlors are allowed to reopen on June 22, along with nail salons, hair salons, and barber shops, a spokeswoman for Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed to NJ Advance Media.

“Yes, tattoo parlors are set to reopen on the same day as hair salons and barbers,” administration spokeswoman Alexandra Altman wrote in an email to NJ Advance Media on Wednesday evening. “For planning purposes, we will be releasing guidance on personal care later in the week.”

Last week, Murphy announced barbershops and hair salons are allowed to reopen starting June 22 in the second week of Stage 2 in the state’s multiphase reopening from months of coronavirus lockdown restrictions. He clarified on Tuesday that nail salons are included in the reopening plan on June 22.

Tony Rodriquez, the owner of Under My Skin Tattoo Studio in Atlantic Highlands, said the majority of the guidelines the state will ask tattoo shop owners to comply under are protocols they have in place already, including sanitization and distance between workstations.

“Honestly it’s about time that we got recognized,” he told NJ Advance Media. “It’s my livelihood. With everything going on, this is the best news I’ve gotten in three months.”

Graig Berkowitz, a co-owner of Pure Ink Tattoo Studio, which has locations in Ledgewood and Boonton, said those in the tattoo industry already “treat every customer as if they have a disease."

“The procedures we have in place already for years are things other industries are adopting,” he said, referring to using disinfectant and wearing gloves. “We view ourselves as if we’re a doctor’s office, or a dentist’s office.”

The shop is also installing in a UV air filtration system, he added, to further ensure the safety of both the artists and the clients.

Stage 2 officially begins Monday, when restaurants can begin offering outdoor dining and nonessential retail stores can welcome customers inside again, at 50% capacity. Child daycare centers may also reopen. All face restrictions focused on social distancing and cleaning of surfaces.

Outdoor, non-contact organized sports can resume June 22, the same day public and private community pools can reopen. And youth day camps can operate beginning July 6. All will have restrictions.

Gyms, libraries, museums, and some government offices are also expected to reopen during Stage 2.

State Motor Vehicle Commission offices will reopen Monday for “a variety of pick-up and drop-off services.” And he said the agency plans to begin conducting behind-the-wheel road tests and issuing new licenses and permits June 29.

“For us, this is really just a return to what we do every day,” said Monarch Tattoo owner Jennifer Carmean. “And for most of us, we’ve been hurting to go back to work every day.”
