Pokemon Sword and Shield doesn't initially include the ability for Pokemon to follow their trainers, but The Isle of Armor DLC changes that. If you have the Isle of Armor DLC, you can allow your Pokemon to follow you while you walk around.
Here's how you can get your lead Pokemon out of its Poke ball.
You have to earn the ability to let Pokemon follow you in The Isle of Armor DLC. No item required! All you need to do is complete the first three trials set by Master Mustard of the Dojo.

Once you've completed the third trial, you'll talk to Master Mustard to receive the secret armor. Master Mustard not only gives you the coveted armor, but also permits you to walk around The Isle of Armor with the lead Pokemon in your party.
That's all there is to it! Note that your lead Pokemon can only be out of its Pokemon on The Isle of Armor. You can chat with it and it will react if you whistle.
