More than 100 firefighters stopped the forward progress of a brush fire that burned about 25 acres on Friday evening in Pomona off the 57 Freeway, authorities said.

Three firefighting helicopters were making water drops on the flames that charred brush on the east side of the 57 Freeway near Temple Avenue, said Supervisor Imy McBride with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Though the blaze burned near the Philips Ranch neighborhood, no structures were threatened by the fire.

Both sides of Pomona Boulevard were closed to traffic, Pomona police said.

County fire received a report of a fire burning grass along the 57 Freeway at 6:36 p.m., McBride said.

By 7:23 p.m., the blaze had charred 6 acres of brush and continued to grow. Though the fire grew to 25 acres, its forward progress was stopped by 8:30 p.m.

Fire crews had the fire about 15 percent contained.

Though a hot, dry week left the area ripe for the spread of such a fire, the winds were light, blowing at four to five miles per hour.
