Forecasters say gusty winds and warm temperatures are coming to Santa Barbara County's South Coast areas this weekend, although cooler temperatures are expected at the beaches.

On Friday, high temperatures should be in the 80s to mid-90s, and in the 70s at the beaches, according to the National Weather Service.

There is some uncertainty with the marine layer, said Ryan Kittell, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

"There are fog and clouds along the coast right now," Kittell said late Thursday morning. "We are expecting that to dissipate, but it may not, and it may stick around and be dense fog at the beach tomorrow (Friday). In that case, it will be much cooler."

Winds are expected to blow between 10 and 20 mph. Gusts up to 35 mph were expected Thursday night, with winds beginning to diminish late Thursday.

“Friday and Saturday will be similar," Kittell said. "Generally, there will be a big difference between beach temperatures and the inland areas, valleys and foothills."

The forecast calls for high temperatures in downtown Santa Barbara of 90 degrees on Friday and 89 on Saturday, Kittell said, adding that the Santa Barbara Airport could see high temperatures around 80 degrees.

In addition, forecasters warned of areas of gusty northwest winds between 15 and 25 mph from Goleta westward on Friday afternoon.

The forecast calls for low temperatures in the mid-50s to mid-60s, and 70 degrees to about 80 in the hills on Friday night. Local wind gusts of up to 35 mph also were expected for Friday night.

"For the foothill community, it's going to be pretty warm even at night," Kittell said.

The latest models show that the strongest winds may occur Friday evening, according to the the National Weather Service's forecast discussion.

Daytime highs between the mid-80s and lower-90s were expected for Saturday, with temperatures in the 70s along the coast. Winds were expected to be between 15 and 25 mph in the afternoon, with nighttime lows in the mid-50s to mid-60s.

Gusty sundowner winds could bring driving hazards to the South Coast on Saturday through early next week, according to the NWS forecast discussion.

Forecasters predict that the hottest day in Santa Maria is likely to be Saturday, with a high near 82 degrees and wind gusts up to 25 mph. Overnight lows should be about 57 degrees. The forecasts for Sunday and Monday call for sunshine.

Daytime highs could reach 90 degrees Sunday on the South Coast, and in the lower to mid-70s at the beaches.

By Sunday night, low temperature are expected to be in the mid-50s to lower-60s.

There may be gusty winds each evening across the South County from Sunday into early next week, according to forecasters.

Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s to mid-80s on Monday, and about 70 degrees at the beaches, with overnight lows in the mid-50s to low 60s.
