Outdoor gatherings must have less than 100 people
BIG RAPIDS — As some begin to plan events for the end of summer and fall, the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety is reminding everyone to stay safe and follow state guidelines.
April Decator, administrative assistant for BRDPS, said the department recently posted a reminder on its Facebook page to the public about how to safely host events during the coronavirus pandemic.
"People have been calling in regard to having different events and asking if they can still host them," she said.
The post states since Big Rapids currently falls within Phase 4 of Michigan's Safe Start Plan, indoor social gatherings and events of more than 10 people are prohibited.
However, outdoor social gatherings and events are permitted as long as people maintain six feet of distance from one another and the event consists of no more than 100 people.
Additionally, crowded outdoor areas require a mask be worn at all times.
Phase 4 of the Michigan Safe Start Plan is the "Improving" stage, and states cases, hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19 are declining, but continued distancing, face coverings and safe workplace practices are required.
Along with the gathering guidelines in this stage of the plan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has issued several other executive orders in reference to preventing the further spread of the coronavirus, including requiring all businesses to refuse entry or service to people who are not wearing a face mask, with limited exceptions.
While area residents concerned about violations of the face mask and other executive orders can contact several state departments, Big Rapids community members can also call a hotline through the BRDPS.
Decator explained if people call the department's main line, they will be prompted to select an option specifically geared toward reporting concerns or violations of the state guidelines and executive orders.
She said several people have reached out to the department with concerns online or and through Facebook, but she said calling would be the best option.
"We don't have anything for reporting online because it is not monitored 24/7." Decator said.
