WOODBRIDGE, NJ — It must be mid-summer in New Jersey! A mother bear and her cub, and now what is either a coyote or a very large fox have been spotted along the Middlesex County Greenway, a very popular walking/jogging trail that runs through Metuchen, Edison and Woodbridge.
The borough of Metuchen announced July 6 that two bears were spotted on the streets of Metuchen and on the Greenway before 8 a.m. that morning; in response, the town closed the Greenway down for a short period. CentralJersey.com reported it is a mother bear and her cub.
Police searched the area on July 6, but never found the mother and her cub. Metuchen police also put out a Nixle alert warning people not to approach the bears.
And a resident took the above photos of what is either a coyote or a large fox on Linsley Place in Metuchen this past Sunday morning. The Rutgers Nature Preserve, which is only a few miles away, was plagued by a coyote this past fall; it attacked two people in November and was eventually located and put down by police officers.
"This is right next to the Greenway," said Metuchen resident Joseph Kibala, who took the photos. "People in the area and on the Greenway need to be aware. I frequently bike on the Greenway, but will not be back until I can bring some bear spray repellent with me."
The Greenway is a 3.5-mile shady walking, biking and running trail that runs through Metuchen, Edison and Woodbridge. People often run and walk along it in the early mornings.
"There have been bear and coyote sightings in Metuchen over the last few years," said Metuchen Police Sgt. Jim Burns. "As far as I am aware, there have been no incidents of any kind other than the sightings."
Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch shared these photos of the mother bear on July 6:
The Woodbridge portion of the Greenway has not seen any reported sightings of a bear or coyote, said a Woodbridge spokesman.
