Here today are a few photos from a recent morning trip through a favorite part of Jones County, a meager farewell gift of sorts.
After 42 years as a journalist, the last 11 here at The Jones County News, it is time to retire. Time to chase grandchildren and watch what they become. Time to finally get around to a few of those projects that have been put off for too long. Time to travel a bit with my wife and friends to see some of the beautiful places in this magnificent country that we’ve long dreamed of visiting.
The last 42 years have been a grand adventure, though admittedly not always appreciated. We get bogged down in the day-to-day grind of life, doing a job, meeting deadlines, paying the bills, tending babies, keeping house, preparing meals, nursing the sick, and we forget to enjoy the ride. But looking back one sees that the good times far outweighed the bad, and life really was good.
Now it is time for “what’s next?” Not sure what the future holds, but I hope it can be at least as good as the past.
That may seem a naïve wish in this difficult time when there is so much angst and anger and worry, with bitterness and distrust of one another trumpeted through the land, the masked and unmasked shouting they are right and the rest are wrong.
But I pray that it is not. I dream that these viruses that threaten us, the biological and the philosophical, will be tamed. That there will be a vaccine to vanquish the COVID-19. That adequate doses of love and goodwill and the milk of human kindness can be administered to calm the troubled spirits and heal the discord that infects us.
We’re all in this together, whether we like it or not, so why not try to get along?
Hope you have enjoyed the photos, and that the words haven’t been too boring. I’ve sure enjoyed sharing them.
Take care now.
