New Restrictions for Bars Along the Delaware Beaches - WBOC TV 16

poloong.blogspot.com

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Right now bars along the Delaware beaches are putting away their bar stools. Governor Carney's new order says brewpubs, restaurants and taprooms along the Delaware coast cannot allow people to stand or sit at the bar.

Bars can be open to prepare drinks, but staff have to bring the drinks to tables.

Places where people gather like dance floors, arcade areas and pool tables are not permitted. Some bar owners say this doesn't change much, while others are worried business will go elsewhere.

Revelation Craft Brewing Company owner Patrick Staggs says while he was not surprised to hear of the new bar rules, he was hoping for fewer restrictions for the busy holiday weekend. But it does not change much for his brewery.

"We didn't have bar seating already in Rehoboth. We served there and then bring to the tables," said Staggs.

For others, it means the potential of closing down

"Definitely hurt us and hurt our revenue but it's better to be safe than sorry. If the governor makes the call then we would rather save lives than bring in a dollar," said A.J. Borrero, general manager of Big Chill Cantina.

The new restrictions apply in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Long Neck, Bethany Beach, South Bethany, Fenwick Island, West Fenwick Island, Ocean View, and Millville.

As well as the following zip codes:

19966 east of RT. 24 and RT. 5, 19945 east of RT. 17, and 19975 east of the intersection of RTs. 20 and 54.

With his outdoor beer gardens able to operate in Milton and Georgetown, Staggs says they expect more visitors for the holiday weekend.

"It's all table seating, spread out, distanced, all the proper protocols, and we expect to see some good numbers as a result there," said Staggs.

Over at Arena's in Georgetown, one of the zip codes allowed to have traditional bar service, Jordan Ensley says she already expected many people for the holiday. Now with even more coming inland, preparation and sanitation are their top priorities.

"Constant sanitation. All the time. We're always wiping down door knobs, chairs, all the tops. Making sure everything is put away super well at night and everything is sanitized between employees," said Ensley.

She tells us while people can sit at the bar there are still restrictions. People must social distance and sit 6-feet apart. Only those from the same household can have bar stools next to one another.

"We need to bounce back very quickly and we need everyone's help to do that. Follow the rules. Let's enjoy some ice cold beers together and we will make it out okay on the other side," Staggs said.
