Seneca Falls, N.Y. — On Saturday, members of the all-female Highlight Pro Skydiving Team took to the sky with an aerial demonstration in Seneca Falls, the site of the first women’s rights convention in 1848.
One by one they exited the plane, gliding back down leaving trails of purple and white smoke. One parachute read “VOTE.” A flag attached to another skydiver read “1920-2020” to mark 100 years since women earned the right to vote in this country.
The colors are significant: All of the gear, parachutes, smoke, streamers and flags are purple, white and yellow which American suffragists used to represent loyalty, purity and hope.
Suffragist Elizabeth Cady Staton and her “Declaration of Sentiments” are often credited with putting into motion the first women’s rights and women’s suffrage movements. In 1869, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton founded the National Woman Suffrage Association.
Four women performed in Seneca Falls over the weekend including Melanie Curtis, Karen “Kaz” Sheekey, Maxine Tate and Keri Bell.
Video from cameras mounted to each of their helmets offered a view of the village along the Cayuga–Seneca Canal as they came in for their landing next to the National Women’s Hall of Fame, across from the Women’s Rights National Historical Park.
The team of 11 professional skydivers will perform at events across the country this year to help celebrate the 100th anniversary and draw attention to women’s rights initiatives.
Women won the right to vote in 1917. The actual ratification of the 19th Amendment took place on August 18, 1920.
Co-founded by professional skydivers Melanie Curtis and Amy Chmelecki, the mission is to inspire all women to live bold, brave lives of their own design in skydiving and beyond.
Upcoming jumps will include Nashville, Tennessee (final state to ratify the 19th Amendment) on Aug. 18; Valley Forge, Pennsylvania (location of the historic “Women of Valley Forge,”) Aug. 25; and New York City Aug. 26 for the unveiling of the first Women’s Suffrage Monument.
