Fire along Rail Trail in Ukiah possibly sparked by cigarette - Ukiah Daily Journal

A vegetation fire along the Rail Trail in Ukiah near Mason Street was quickly extinguished Wednesday by crews from both the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority and Cal Fire.

Crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Mason Street around 3:50 p.m. July 1, and though structures were threatened, the fire was put out after burning only a relatively small area of dry grass.

UVFA Investigator Ian Broeske said the cause of the fire was still officially under investigation, but it appeared to have been unintentionally set, possibly by a cigarette.

The same area burned two years ago, and the fire in July of 2018 reached nearby buildings and caused significant damage.

“What helped phenomenally this time, however, was that the weeds had been cut down,” said Broeske, explaining that city work crews “came and cleared out the entire length of the Rail Trail last week. That’s what saved the day and allowed us to stop the fire fast, because last time the weeds had not been cut down.”
