Editorial/Opinion – Whenever I run into people around Sebastian, we talk about news and things going on around town. Still, I always ask how they feel about the candidates running for the upcoming City Council election in November.
I’ve had some good conversations with people, and it’s always a pleasure because you get to find out what’s on their minds. The discussions are never like the ones on social media, and there are fewer arguments.
I have learned that most residents I talk to in Sebastian understand that local politics will affect them more than the national level. What happens in their town matters the most, and people are researching the candidates more this year after what happened to cause the recall election last year.
In all past local elections, Sebastian Daily stayed away and never got involved with candidate recommendations. However, so many people in Sebastian have asked us to endorse candidates because of what happened in 2019.
Unfortunately, three candidates who broke the law were voted in because of low voter turnout, misinformation, and residents not doing their research. However, voters are taking no chances this time, and it’s great to see their involvement.
People don’t need to know Sebastian Daily’s opinion or reasons to recommend and endorse candidates. We didn’t do it during the recall election because we wanted residents to make their own decision without the local media. And quite frankly, it worked well for citizens in Sebastian.
The City of Sebastian has since been restored to integrity after the voters decided to recall the previous council and replaced them with three new people.
Therefore, Sebastian Daily has decided not to endorse candidates. You don’t need us telling you what to do or who to vote for in this upcoming election. We’ve been different than most newspapers because we don’t get involved in politics as local media. People want to read the news and what’s happening in their town. We will continue to offer that for many years to come.
Ultimately, this is your decision and the residents don’t need the local media telling them how to vote.
We will be publishing facts and information about each candidate after our City Council Candidates Forum.
Sebastian Daily will be hosting its forum this year with the Taxpayers Association of IRC on October 14, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. If you have a question for the candidates, please submit them to: [email protected].
