The Southern Rail Commission will award grant funding from the Federal Railroad Administration to three cities along the Coast. Those cities are Gulfport, Bay St. Louis, and Pascagoula.
Along with these three coastal cities, Birmingham, Alabama will also receive funding.
SRC will award a total of $953,338. Gulfport will receive $246,500. Bay St. Louis will receive $270,000. Pascagoula will receive $186,838. Birmingham will receive $250,000. Each of these grants required a local match of the same amount.
The grant funding will allow for investments in existing station rail facilities that ensure safe access and better connectivity to and from the station.
Gulfport Public Information Officer LaShaundra McCarty tells News 25 how this grant is going to help bring the train depot back to life. “Well, several things. One of course is the landscaping, but we would also like to extend our canopy for those who will be coming through who will be spending a little time out on this platform. We would also like to improve some of the ADA compliances for that building so that as passengers come through and they have those particular needs they will be met.”
Earlier this year, Amtrak announced their intent to begin passenger rail service between New Orleans and Mobile in January 2022.
