Traffic Inbox: Dips along Veterans Expressway causing damage to vehicles - Bay News 9

TAMPA, Fla. — Every day, cars scrape at multiple spots along the Veterans Expressway — and it's been like this for a long time.

Bob Gipson spent nearly a thousand dollars to fix the damage to his car from driving the Veterans Expressway.

"The car is a 1968 All-American Camaro with a 350 engine. The Transmissions banged, the engine banged, the bottom is scraped up, the front spoiler is completely gone," Gipson explained.

He has sworn off driving the Veterans Expressway because his car bottoms out along the well-traveled road.

"It's just not safe out there on the Veterans. It's not safe, and if I have to go out here and scrape my care one more time to save one life, I'm gonna do it."

In both directions of the Veterans Expressway where the road meets any bridge deck, there is a disparity in the height of those two surfaces.

Short of re-engineering and repaving those overpasses, Gipson says some signage warning drivers is essential.

"If there was... a quarter-mile before that dip, if there was a sign that said *slow down - dip move over* people would move over. Especially if you don't know that dip is there. And if it's in the rain it needs to be flashing because you hit those dips in the rain..... you're gonna wreck," Gipson explained.

This issue is not new to the Veterans Expressway. When the roadway was widened and the express lanes were added a few years ago, the opening was delayed for this very reason. Repairs were made then but clearly need new attention now.

Our Traffic Expert Chuck Henson reached out to the Florida Turnpike who manages the Veterans Expressway.
