The Michigan high school baseball playoffs begin Tuesday with pre-district games kicking off the tournament.
The district games are Friday or Saturday, with regional semifinals Tuesday, June 9. A “super regional” is Saturday, June 12, with a regional final and quarterfinal. Semifinals are June 17-18 at Michigan State University, with state finals Saturday, June 19.
Two years ago, Saginaw Nouvel made a run to the state finals in Division 4, with Swan Valley doing the same in Division 2 three years ago.
Will a Saginaw-area team make a similar run this season? If they do, here are the top players who will probably lead the way.
Carter Campau
Bullock Creek
Carter Campau, a Bullock Creek junior, has committed to Central Michigan as a catcher, but he’s helped the Lancers win this season as a hitter, catcher and pitcher.
“He’s talented, and he’s a hard worker,” Bullock Creek coach Scott Madill said. “He’s confident. He really is the whole package.”
At the plate, Campau is hitting .468 with 22 extra base hits, including three homers. On the mound, he touched 88 mph with his fastball and owns a 4-2 record with a 1.50 earned run average.
Avery Goldensoph
Swan Valley
Avery Goldensoph has been a mainstay on the Swan Valley team since helping lead the Vikings to the Division 2 state final as a freshman. Goldensoph, who has signed to pitch for the University of Michigan, has had a good season as a senior on a young Swan Valley team.
He is 5-3 with a 1.59 earned run average with 75 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. At the plate, Goldensoph is hitting .340 with 10 doubles and a .515 on-base percentage.
Logan Heath
Merrill
Logan Heath, a three-sport star, will cap his high school career as a top two-way player with Merrill. He has 10 doubles and six homers – including two grand slams – for the 25-9 Vandals.
“Logan could play anywhere,” Merrill coach Dave DeBeau said. “He’s played anywhere we needed him. He’s a true five-tool player.”
Heath has played catcher, third base, first base, outfielder and pitcher. He is hitting .385 with 28 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. On the mound, Heath is 5-1 with 55 strikeouts in 34 inning with a 0.63 earned run average.
Hayden Hileman
Freeland
Hayden Hileman, a junior, has helped Freeland post a 27-10 record on the mound and at the plate. He is 5-3 with a 1.55 earned run average with 48 strikeouts in 49 innings and four shutouts.
“He’s just a baseball guy,” Freeland coach Justin Davis said. “He’s always in the park playing. Even when we don’t have practice, he’s in the cages hitting.
Hileman is hitting .395 with a .505 on-base percentage.
Quin Konuszewski
Saginaw Heritage
Quin Konuszewski is completing his final season at Heritage before joining the Pitt baseball program as a 6-foot-2, left-handed pitcher. This season Konuszewski, the son of former Bridgeport, University of Michigan and Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dennis Konuszewski, is 6 -2 this season with two saves.
In 43 innings, Konuszewski has 80 strikeouts and has allowed 28 hits with a 2.12 earned run average. He also plays center field and is hitting .323.
“He’s a great athlete and a great center fielder for us,” Heritage coach John Sullivan said. “You don’t often see your top pitcher who can also excel in the field, but Quin does that for us.”
Corbin Larkin
Hemlock
Corbin Larkin, a junior, leads Hemlock in hits (40), batting average (.384), on-base percentage (.467), runs (35), stolen bases (17) and fielding percentage at shortstop and catcher. He also has four triples and four doubles for the 24-4 Huskies.
“He can hit for power or contact, and he uses the entire field,” Hemlock coach Toby Larkin said. “He is one of the fastest players in the district and a force on the basepaths as well.”
Leyton Mays
Millington
Leyton Mays, a junior, has set three Millington single-season records this year with 36 walks, 51 runs scored and 45 stolen bases. In 84 at-bats, the Millington shortstop has 35 hits, including five doubles and two triples.
“He’s really patient at the plate … he’s getting good pitches to hit,” Millington coach Chris Dipzinski said. “Leyton is quick … a very smart baserunner.”
Alex Money
Midland High
Alex Money finishes off an impressive high school career for Midland High before moving on to Hope College. Money has helped lead Midland High as a shortstop and pitcher this season.
At the plate, Money hit .372 with a .522 on-base percentage. He has four doubles, five triples, 17 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has also been hit by 14 pitches.
On the mound, Money is 4-2 with two saves and a 2.35 earned run average. In 38 2/3 innings, Money has struck out 30 with four walks.
Tyler Sager
Chesaning
Chesaning junior Tyler Sager has had a breakout season at the plate and on the mound for the 16-8-1 Indians. The right-handed pitcher is 6-1, with 94 strikeouts and nine walks. He has thrown two no-hitters.
“He’s just improved so much from playing summer ball,” Chesaning coach Bob Sager said. “Being on a team in the southeast part of the state and playing against some of the top-tier talent in the state has led to his improvement.”
As a hitter, Tyler Sager has a .579 batting average, .662 on-base percentage and .772 slugging percentage. He has 28 RBIs, 23 runs scored and nine doubles.
Drew Titsworth
Frankenmuth
Drew Titsworth, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, has committed to pitch for the University of Michigan, and he did not disappoint in his first high school season. Titsworth is 4-0 with two saves, striking out 66 with just seven walks in 39 innings.
Titsworth, who also played on Frankenmuth’s varsity football and basketball teams as a sophomore, owns a 1.08 earned run average.
“He has very good off-speed pitches that when they’re on, they’re tough to hit,” Frankenmuth coach Gene McKinstry said. “When he’s able to throw his change-up, he becomes really tough. It helps when you can touch 92 with your fastball too.”
