Just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nicholas Simbolon was found by his wife suffering from a gunshot wound inside his Tesla in the garage of his home along the 1800 block of Hawkbrook Drive, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

Simbolon, 42, was heading home from work when he was followed from an electric-vehicle charging station in the 200 block of South Citrus Street in West Covina, Luna said. When Simbolon parked in his garage, authorities said, the suspect approached him and stole a few items before fatally shooting the man.

Information on what was stolen was not immediately available.

A vehicle of interest caught on surveillance video was believed to be connected to the robbery.

The vehicle was spotted on Wednesday near Santa Monica Boulevard and Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills and the driver, Jerrid Joseph Powell, of Los Angeles, was arrested on suspicion of killing Simbolon.

Simbolon worked as a project manager in the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office for the last four years, according to County CEO Fesia Davenport. He previously worked at the county Superior Court before joining her office in 2019.

“Nicholas was key and instrumental in developing many software applications for the CEO’s office to modernize and propel forward our ability to deliver services to citizens and residents of LA County,” Davenport said. “He will be deeply missed by all his friends and colleagues down here in the county, specifically in the Chief Executive Office.”

A gun believed by authorities to have been used in the robbery was found inside the vehicle during Powell’s arrest, Luna said.

The robbery appeared to be an isolated crime, Luna said, and the killing appeared to have no relation to Simbolon’s employment with the county, though it was not entirely ruled out as the investigation continued.

Powell was booked on Thursday on suspicion of murder and robbery and was being held on $2 million bail.
