MUSKEGON – The Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament kicks off this week for girls soccer.
Here are 10 players to keep tabs on as state tournament action gets rolling in the Muskegon area, listed alphabetically:
Meah Bajt
Spring Lake
Mona Shores coach Dylan Darga said that Bajt was a tough cover for his squad, which fell to the Lakers, 1-0, a couple weeks ago. The junior forward has tallied 21 goals and five assists for a Spring Lake squad that holds a 10-2-2 record.
Sophia Cooney
Ludington
The senior outside left mid leads the Orioles in points with 22 (12 goals, 10 assists). Cooney scored the lone goal for Ludington in last week’s 2-1 loss to North Muskegon as the Orioles wrapped up the regular season 14-5. She will be playing soccer at Alma College.
Maggie Evans
Whitehall
The junior striker earned Division 3 first-team all-state honors as a freshman. The season was canceled last year because of the pandemic, but this spring she has tallied 25 goals and eight assists. Vikings coach Dan Nichols said Evans is closing in on the school’s career record for goals.
Sophia Hekkema
Reeths-Puffer
The athletic sophomore is a rising prosect on the basketball court, having recently received an offer from Grand Valley State University, but she’s a force on the pitch, too. Hekkema has tallied 19 goals and six assists, working well with McKenna Monette, Brooke Bradley and Taeah Rensberger in the mid.
Hope Johnson
North Muskegon
The senior captain has battled injuries during her career, but when she’s healthy, Johnson is among the top players around. She was a Division 4 first-team all-stater as a freshman. This season, the forward has piled up 25 goals and 16 assists to lead the Norse.
Jami Mikesell
Mona Shores
The senior captain is a key to the Sailors’ success as a defender. Mona Shores coach Dylan Darga said that Mikesell does a great job organizing the defensive unit. She’s a vocal leader, who helps build out the attack going forward. Goalkeeper Ella Buikema has 10 shutouts behind her.
Emily Olsen
North Muskegon
The senior captain has been a force from the center mid position for the talented Norse with 19 goals and 18 assists. Olsen scored both goals in North Muskegon’s 2-1 victory over Lakes 8 Activities Conference champion Ludington last week.
Hailey Stowe
Ludington
The senior center mid has totaled 12 goals and seven assists for an Orioles team that captured the Lakes 8 Activities Conference title. She forms a strong 1-2 scoring punch with senior Sophia Cooney. Stowe has committed to Adrian College, where she plans to play soccer and basketball.
Bri Wade
Mona Shores
The signee of Division II University of Illinois Springfield is a tough matchup for opponents with her length at 6-foot-1, athleticism and soccer IQ. Wade, a senior striker, leads the Sailors with 15 goals and six assists. Mona Shores carries a 13-3-1 overall record into the week.
Audrey Wilson
North Muskegon
The senior captain is the Norse’s “workhorse” in the center mid spot, coach Caleb Parnin said. She has tallied 16 goals and 10 assists. Wilson challenges opponents the entire length of the field, according to Parnin, who added that she has a knack for the goal and plays incredibly selfless soccer.
