Michigan is updating its mask mandate to more closely align it with the latest federal guidance, which provides more freedom for individuals who are fully vaccinated.

On Friday, May 14, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced that beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 15, Michiganders will no longer be required to wear a mask outdoors in any setting. Individuals who are fully vaccinated will no longer need to wear a mask indoors, while those who have not been fully vaccinated must continue to wear a face covering indoors until July 1.

“For more than a year, we’ve been following the best data and science to slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives,” Whitmer said in a prepared statement. “The vast majority of us have trusted the scientists and experts to keep us safe during the pandemic, and it has worked. With millions of Michiganders fully vaccinated, we can now safely and confidently take the next step to get back to normal.

“The message is clear: vaccines work to protect you and your loved ones. If you have not yet received your vaccine, now is the time to sign up. This pandemic has been one of the toughest challenges of our lifetimes, but we came together as a state to persevere. We have all been working incredibly hard toward getting back to some sense of normalcy, and today’s news makes all of that work worthwhile.”

To be fully vaccinated means it’s been two weeks since your second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks since your single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

It wasn’t immediately clear how businesses and other indoor establishments would determine if an individual is fully vaccinated. Attempts to reach the state’s health department were not immediately successful.

The changes to Michigan’s mask mandate align with new recommendations announced Thursday by the CDC. If you’re not fully vaccinated, the CDC still recommends you wear a face covering and social distance when around people outside your household.

Other current guidance from the CDC for individuals who are fully vaccinated include:

  • If you travel in the U.S., you do not need to get tested before or after travel or self-quarantine after travel.
  • You do not need to get tested before leaving the U.S. on an international trip unless your destination requires it. However, you should still get tested 3-5 days after international travel.
  • If you’ve been around someone who has COVID-19, you do not need to stay away from others or get tested unless you have symptoms. However, you should get tested if you live or work in a correctional or detention facility or a homeless shelter and are around someone who has COVID-19.

Regardless of if you’ve been vaccinated or not, you’re still required to wear a mask in hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, and on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation, and still must follow masking policies held by workplaces and local businesses.

To date, Michigan has administered more than 7.87 million doses of vaccine. About 55.6% of residents 16 years and older have received at least one dose, and more than 43% are fully vaccinated.

Residents 12 to 15 years old are now also eligible to receive Pfizer’s two-dose vaccine.

Vaccine appointments, including walk-ins, are available through local health departments, pharmacies and health care providers across the state. For more information, visit the state’s COVID-19 vaccine website.
