All signs are pointing to eastern North Carolina getting several inches of rain over the next few days, as a low pressure system slowly moves up the coast that could become tropical.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday afternoon a broad area of low pressure located near the coast of northeastern South Carolina continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the adjacent Atlantic waters and portions of eastern North Carolina.

The low is expected to move northeastward near or just offshore of the Outer Banks on Thursday, and then turn north-northeastward and move along the mid-Atlantic coast Friday.

Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development, and a tropical or subtropical cyclone is likely to form within the next day or so.

Forecasters are giving the low a 70 percent chance of becoming the fifth tropical system of 2020 in the Atlantic basin, which would be called Faye if it gains tropical storm status.

Regardless of development, the system is expected to produce locally heavy rainfall that could cause some flash flooding across portions of eastern North Carolina during the next few days.

Gusty winds are also possible along the Outer Banks through Thursday, along with a moderate risk of rip currents for all beaches.

The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office said the bulk of the precipitation currently remains offshore any organized convective showers that have to potential to produce heavy downpours
with localized flooding.

Overall rainfall totals through Thursday are forecast to range from one to two inches inland, and two to four inches along the immediate coast with locally higher amounts.

Once the system moves away, a weak cold front is forecast to sweep through the area late Saturday with a few showers and thunderstorms.

National Weather Service forecast for Nags Head, as of Wednesday 1:45 p.m.
