Okemos Public Schools Superintendent John Hood urged those within his district to follow federal health guidelines after a high school senior tested positive for COVID-19 last month.
Safety measures were in place for an Okemos High School graduation ceremony, but not all students remained in their vehicles as they were supposed to, Hood said in an email to families on Friday afternoon.
“There were instances at graduation in which some in attendance did not follow the communicated expected social-distancing guidelines,” he added. “In retrospect, I regret not stopping the ceremony at that time.”

The school district immediately informed Ingham County Health Department and those who may have been exposed, according to Hood.
To prepare for the upcoming school year, Hood said the district will “continue to educate our staff, students and families as we all learn more about the nature of this virus and best practices to keep us all as safe as possible.”
Hood urged everyone to collectively follow guidelines for gatherings, social-distancing and mask wearing.

“It is my hope that each of us will take time to pause and reflect on our actions and inaction, on our choices to follow recommended safety measures, both individually and as members of the broader school community,” he said.
“If we are to meet our shared goal of having our schools reopen and stay open successfully, we must seize this moment as a call to action,” he added.
