Around the turn of the century, Liverpool's academy had a golden touch with forwards. Not only did the Reds produce 'God' himself in Robbie Fowler, but also the only Liverpool player who has won the Ballon d'Or to date in Michael Owen. Those two seemed to open up the floodgates for eager scouts looking to find the next Fowler and Owen in Merseyside.
But in the last two decades, the well has somewhat dried up. Liverpool's success rate with academy forwards recently has been disappointing.
It's not like the club has been short of talented young strikers. From Hungarian Krisztián Németh being dubbed the 'mini Fernando Torres' to Adam Morgan making a name for himself scoring plenty of goals in a team with players like Raheem Sterling, Conor Coady and Suso, there have been buckets of promise.

Then there has been Jerome Sinclair, who is still the youngest player to play for the club, and Ben Woodburn, who is the youngest player to score for Liverpool's first team. Rhian Brewster was another with a lot of promise after he finished as top scorer at the U17 World Cup. To varying extents, all were given a chance by Jürgen Klopp.
But despite the promise the above-mentioned players showed, they have all fallen down the pecking order and never fulfilled the potential many had predicted. Their track record has made the striker position a bit of a 'haunted' one in the academy.
But there is one player now coming through the ranks who will be determined to change that. Jayden Danns has been an absolute revelation for Liverpool, having scored in every competitive game he has played in for the club's U18 side so far.
Danns has so far scored nine goals and registered two assists in 7 games in the league, and has four goals in three games in the U18 Premier League Cup. He also made his debut at senior level in the EFL Trophy, coming on in the last few minutes against Morecambe.
A tall forward who likes to involve himself in the build-up play, Danns has an excellent eye for a goal and he is versatile as well. Last season he often played as a winger for the club's U18 side and is very capable of playing on either flank.
The son of Neil Danns, an accomplished footballer who played for teams like Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers and also represented Guyana as captain at international level, Jayden will be hoping to follow in his father's footsteps. At Liverpool, he's got all the tools to go far.
Physically, he is very capable. He's got the intelligence and the technical ability too, all of which combines to make him a really exciting prospect.
If he keeps going at the same rate, a first team chance could be in his future too. Klopp recently gave Danns' teammate Trey Nyoni a chance to train with the first team and even a place on the bench against Brentford in the Premier League. He is a manager renowned for promoting youth talent.
Danns is therefore in the perfect place, and could very well soon be given a similar opportunity by Klopp — especially with League Cup and FA Cup games coming up in the next few months. There's no need to place massive expectations on the youngster's shoulders, but the early signs are exciting.
