Graffiti removal along 215 Freeway in Menifee part of Clean California campaign - Press-Enterprise

poloong.blogspot.com

Q: Dennis Bailey of Menifee asked about messy landscaping and graffiti along the 215 Freeway between Ethanac Road and McCall Boulevard along the northbound and southbound lanes in  Menifee’s Sun City area of Riverside County. He said the ivy on the walls has been blown down again and there’s new graffiti on the southbound off-ramp wall on McCall. Bailey contacted On the Road previously about this area and remains concerned about trash, landscaping issues and graffiti.

A: We notified Caltrans District 8 about this area again. We received an immediate response that maintenance crews would be addressing the landscaping and litter in the area but cannot replant the ivy. By now, the crews likely have started working on this area, or already finished, removing tumbleweeds and litter as well as trimming the ivy, removing graffiti and addressing other needs along this stretch of the 215. “The crews are on a tight schedule for Clean California and have been working hard to keep our roadways clean,” said Caltrans Spokeswoman Terri Kasinga. The work is part of the three-year, $1.5 billion Clean California campaign which seeks to fight litter and beautify California.

Q: Kimberly Jones of Moreno Valley asked when Caltrans would repair the huge potholes on the 215 Freeway at the Cactus Avenue overpass in Riverside. “Flat tires are no fun,” she said.

A: We passed our reader’s question along to Caltrans and Caltrans repaired these potholes almost as soon as they heard from On the Road about this, which was at the end of October, said Spokeswoman Terri Kasinga. We appreciate Caltrans’ quick response.

We’d also like to remind our readers that Caltrans has an online Customer Service Request system (https://csr.dot.ca.gov/) for citizens to report problems like road issues, graffiti and trash along the freeways.

Road safety tips

As winter approaches, On the Road would like to offer safety reminders for driving in the snow because many Inland Empire residents enjoy winter trips to the local mountains and ski resorts. Be safe and follow these tips from Caltrans and California Highway Patrol before heading to the snow:

• Check your vehicle. Make sure the brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater, muffler and exhaust systems are in top working condition and check your antifreeze. Make sure your tires are properly inflated (cold temperatures can affect the tires’ air pressure) and still have adequate tread.

• Carry chains in snow conditions, even if you have a four-wheel drive, and pay attention to road signs indicating if chains are required. Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol can prohibit any vehicle from entering a chain-control area when it’s determined that chains are inadequate for conditions. The CHP can also restrict any vehicles – with our without chains – due to dangerous weather conditions.

• Take drinking water, snacks, a few blankets, and medication in case you are delayed by weather, traffic or an accident. You could get hit by a sudden snowstorm while on the road and be stuck there for hours.

• If you break down, stay with your vehicle and call for help. Do not stop on a highway, except in an emergency.

• Allow extra time to get where you’re going. Trips to the mountains can take longer in rain or storm conditions, or on icy roads.

• Keep your gas tank full.

• Drive extra carefully. Accelerate and decelerate slowly to keep traction and avoid skids. Do not speed. The speed limit when using chains is 25-40 mph, based on conditions.

• Monitor area weather and road conditions before you leave. Visit www.chp.ca.gov or www.dot.ca.gov, or download the Weather Channel app (or another weather app) on your cellphone. Or, call the Caltrans Highway Information Service at 1-800-427-7623 (ROAD) for road and traffic conditions.

Do you commute to work in the Inland Empire? Spend a lot of time in your vehicle? Have questions about driving, freeways, toll roads or parking? If so, write or call On the Road and we’ll try to answer your questions. Please include your question or issue, name, city of residence, phone number and email address. Write ontheroad@pe.com or call 951-368-9670.
