Big crowds will be returning to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of 2021 this Thursday, along with some nice autumn weather. At least for late November.
After being scaled down and off-limits to spectators in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and chilled by frigid weather in previous years, the famous holiday parade in the Big Apple will be blessed with seasonable temperatures and mostly sunny skies, according to weather forecasters.
It will be chilly during the morning hours, when the parade kicks off, but not as cold as it has been in recent days.
The National Weather Service’s New York regional office is calling for morning temperatures hovering around 43 degrees when the big parade gets underway at 9 a.m. Thursday, with a light breeze making it feel closer to 38 degrees.
The best weather will come later in the day on Thanksgiving, when afternoon temperatures will climb to about 55 degrees — about 4 degrees warmer than average for Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving night, clouds are expected to build, and there’s a chance of light rain showers after midnight and Friday morning, the weather service says.
On Black Friday, traditionally a major shopping day, there’s a 30% chance of rain showers in New York before 1 p.m., and skies will turn partly sunny in the afternoon, with highs near 47 degrees, the weather service says. So Friday will feel much colder than Thursday.
How to watch from home: The Macy’s Thanksgiving parade will be aired on NBC, CBS and Peacock.
Philadelphia parade forecast
In the City of Brotherly Love, the annual Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade is scheduled to get underway at 8:30 a.m. Thursday with a 30-minute preview show, which will be followed by three hours of marching, music and performances on the streets of Philly.
This will be the 102nd year Philadelphia is hosting a Thanksgiving parade, making this the oldest one in the nation.
The National Weather Service’s regional forecast office in Mount Holly, which covers the Philadelphia region, is calling for mostly sunny skies on Thanksgiving Day, with afternoon highs reaching 55 degrees. However, it will be chilly in the morning, when the parade kicks off, with temperatures hovering in the upper 30s to low 40s and a slight breeze making it feel a few degrees colder.
The good news: No rain is expected in the morning or afternoon. The weather service says there’s a chance of scattered rain showers between 7 p.m. and midnight, then rain showers are likely early Friday morning before skies turn partly sunny, with afternoon highs only reaching about 46 degrees.
How to watch from home: The Philly Thanksgiving parade will be broadcast on 6abc, starting at 9 a.m. Thursday. The parade will also be aired on Hulu.
