On Friday Nov. 12, father and son artist duo Mike and Larsson McSwain opened their cross-country-inspired art gallery "Along for the Ride". This scrapbook-like art show brings viewers along the journey of re-discovering the world during the 2020 COVID pandemic.
"This show is about the road as much as it is about home and as much as it is about the beauty in the everyday, no matter how amazing or horrifying or mundane or maddening." This reads across one of the many pieces hanging on the wall describing the internal monologue felt throughout their journey.
Each floor in Artspace shows a different part of the road trip. The bottom floor takes you through Colorado, the second floor brings you through Texas and the top floor shows all the places they travelled to get Larsson back to New York. Each piece is different from the one before it. Using combinations of mixed medias, watercolor and ink, photos, and cutout techniques makes each piece feel unique and tells its own story.
"When this pandemic stopped the world, Larsson and I set out on this road trip to connect our lives,” says Mike McSwain. “We found peace in giving ourselves the freedom to chase our bliss with no guilt."
"Along for the Ride" will be featured at Artspace until Jan. 15, 2022.
