A Portion of Highway 61 Will Be Closed From Java Moose Heading East Through Grand Marais May 10 - Late July
GRAND MARAIS, Minn. – The downtown district of Grand Marais will be busier than usual this summer due to an ongoing extensive construction project years in the making.
MnDOT is currently working to reconstruct the portion of Highway 61 just west of the city.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions for those heading into and out of the shoreline community.
The project also comes with a long-overdue environmental cleanup project.
It was back in 1996 when a service station experienced a spill, causing contamination to be leaked into the soil.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency figured now would be a good time to get the cleanup completed before contaminants could seep into Lake Superior.
A section of the road from Java Moose heading east will be closed from May 10th through late July to cleanup the contaminated section.
“It’s a huge issue for us because our economy is almost totally based on hospitality. Taking care of visitors is what we do. Making certain that they are minimally inconveniences is important to us. Without those visitors, we have a difficult time putting food on family tables,” said Jim Boyd, president of the Cook County Chamber of Commerce.
Once all is said and done, the highway will be more pedestrian-friendly, and safety will be enhanced.
There will also be an improved bike trail running through the city of Grand Marais.
Construction is expected to be wrapped up by October.
