With peak travel season on the Outer Banks fast approaching, North Carolina Department of Transportation crews have changed speed limit signs along several sections of NC 12.

On Saturday, May 15, the speed limits in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Frisco on Hatteras Island dropped from 45 miles per hour to 35. Up the beach, the speed limit dropped to 35 miles per hour in Duck and Corolla. The speed limits are lowered to account for more vehicle and pedestrian traffic during the summer months.

Speed limits also dropped in congested areas of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, such as the area just north of Oregon Inlet and the area near the Haulover Parking Lot south of Avon.

“This is the time of year when motorists on the Outer Banks need to be keenly aware of additional bikes, pedestrians and cars,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Sterling Baker. “They should drive with caution and obey the posted speed limits in order to keep everyone safe on and along Highway 12 this summer.”

The seasonal speed limits remain in effect through Sept. 15.
