What a difference a year can make.

On Jan. 1, 2020, the streets of Pasadena were packed with colorful floats, brassy marching bands and throngs of parade viewers.

But on Jan. 1, 2021, with the Rose Parade cancelled by the enduring pandemic, it was a very different scene.

• The 2020 Sweepstakes Trophy — given to the most beautiful entry — was awarded to the UPS Store for its “Stories Change Our World” float. It was created by Irwindale-based Fiesta Parade Floats, which has created dozens, if not hundreds, of floats over the years for the parade. “I started decorating floats in the Rose Parade when I was 8-years-old,” Fiesta Floats owner Tim Estes said. “That was 56 years ago. Parade organizers shifted their energy to a two-hour TV special and invested their hopes in the parade’s return in a year in a region cleared of coronavirus.

In the meantime, the streets were quiet.

A few fans planted their lawn chairs along the parade route, securing what would  have been a great view of the parade.

Some came to get a glimpse of the floral Donate Life sculpture on the lawn of the Tournament House.

A handful of float builders rolled flower-filled wagons along the route. A car caravan honored victims of the pandemic. And a couple of folks even strode along in their own mini-march, declaring this the “Year of the Mulligan.”

The Rose Bowl was silent, with the game moved to Texas this year.

Most folks who buzzed around Pasadena on Friday morning shared the same sentiment: Hoping that the coronavirus outbreak is just a memory this time next year, allowing the parade to return.
