STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Armed with garbage bags, trash pickers, sticker scrapers and gloves, more than two dozen community members met Saturday morning at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Hart Boulevard for “Operation Illegal Sign Takedown.”

District Attorney Michael McMahon — who spearheaded the event with the city Department of Sanitation (DSNY), the Forest Regional Residents Civic Association, Forest Avenue Business Improvement District, NYPD Patrol Borough and Where to Turn — said litter, signs and stickers are eyesores that need to go.

The semi-annual cleanup has been taking place for more than 30 years.

“You are part of an Islandwide effort to get these signs down,” said McMahon, giving the crowd a pep talk before heading to their respective zones to clean.

“This is the enemy right here,” he said, holding up a sign advertising cash for cars. “We will vanquish the enemy and we will not be deterred.”

Cleanups also took place near the 121st Precinct stationhouse at 970 Richmond Ave., the 122nd Precinct stationhouse at 2320 Hylan Blvd. and the 123rd Precinct stationhouse at 116 Main St.

Dennis McKeon of Where to Turn said campaign and other advertisement signs could be brought to 22 Brienna Ct. in Charleston every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. through Dec. 4 in exchange for community service credit. Every five signs collected equals one hour of community service.

“People who put up these signs target busy roadways, like ramps on and off of the Staten Island Expressway,” McKeon said, adding that the Bradley Avenue exit on North Gannon Avenue is a particularly bad location.

A parking lot across from Key Food was littered with political campaign signs and the former CapitalOne bank parking lot, now empty, was littered so badly that it took nearly one dozen garbage bags to rid it of trash.

All signs collected are brought to the DSNY for recycling.

In previous years, political signs were often given to schools to reuse because advertisements were only printed on one side. “These days they print on both sides, so we have to just get rid of them,” he said.

Former borough presidential candidate Mark Murphy, his wife, Jessica, and their son were among the many community members in attendance.

Community members focused their efforts along Forest Avenue, starting at Hart Boulevard and going as far as Clove Road, making sure to check side roads as well.

Once the cleanup was complete, they planted tulip bulbs in the flower beds along Forest Avenue so that the flowers will bloom once the warm weather arrives in the spring.

“This is really a great event,” said Stephanie, who declined to give her last name. “It makes you more proud of the community when you contribute to its upkeep. I’m proud to live here.”
