The Arkansas Department of Health reported 26 new COVID-19 cases in Union County Sunday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 1,187. The number of confirmed cases in the county grew to 1,057, up 24 from Saturday, and there were 130 probable cases in the county Sunday, up two from Saturday.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests that determine confirmed cases are more sensitive than the antigen tests that determine probable cases.
Two deaths attributable to COVID-19 were reported locally Sunday. Fifty-two Union County residents have now died as a result of the virus, indicating a local COVID mortality rate -- the percentage of people who contract COVID-19 and die as a result of it -- of 4.4%.
There were 119 people hospitalized due to the virus Sunday in the Southwest Public Health Region of Arkansas, where Union County is located, including 49 in intensive care units and 27 on ventilator support.
The number of Union County residents considered recovered from the virus grew to 1,077, up 26 from Saturday. Active cases in the county decreased by two, dropping to 58 Sunday, which represented 4.9% of all the cases identified locally. The active cases in Union County Sunday included 42 confirmed cases and 16 probable cases.
The Arkansas Center for Health Improvement reported school district-level COVID data updated through Oct. 26 this week. The data includes all cases within a school district’s catchment area and isn’t limited to staff, faculty or student cases.
According to the ACHI, as of Oct. 26, 643 COVID-19 cases had been identified in the El Dorado School District’s catchment area, including 32 new cases in the last two weeks; 107 cases had been identified in the Junction City School District’s catchment area, including 11 new in the last two weeks; 54 cases had been identified in the Parkers Chapel School District’s catchment area; 125 cases had been identified in the Smackover-Norphlet School District’s catchment area, including 12 new in the last two weeks; and 82 cases had been identified in the Strong-Huttig School District’s catchment area.
The ADH reported 16 new COVID-19 test results returned from Union County Sunday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 85.7% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 13,195 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 12,008 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 9%.
In Arkansas, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases grew to reach 113,057 on Sunday, up 867 from Saturday. There were 104,239 confirmed cases in the state Sunday, up 757 from Saturday, and 8,818 probable cases, up 110 from Saturday
The ADH reported 33 Arkansans’ deaths that resulted from COVID-19 Sunday, setting a new-one day record in the state for COVID deaths and bringing the state’s death toll to 1,958, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 639 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus Sunday, including 225 in ICUs and 106 on ventilator support.
Recoveries in the state grew to 100,666, up 599 from Saturday. There were 10,420 active cases in Arkansas Sunday, up 235 from Saturday, setting a new one-day record for active cases and representing 9.2% of all the cases in the state. The active cases in Arkansas Sunday included 8,404 confirmed cases and 2,106 probable cases.
In October, 349,217 COVID-19 test results returned from around the state to the ADH, including 309,043 PCR test results and 40,174 antigen test results; the total number of tests performed represents approximately 10% of the state’s population. On Sunday, the ADH reported 9,082 new COVID-19 test results returned, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the state of 9.5%.
At 4:45 p.m. Sunday, Johns Hopkins University reported 9,189,715 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 3,612,478 people were considered recovered, leaving 5,346,367 cases -- 58.2% -- active nationwide. There had been 230,870 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Sunday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.5%.
Johns Hopkins reported 46,386,903 COVID-19 cases worldwide Sunday afternoon. Of those, 30,944,606 people were considered recovered, leaving 14,243,355 cases -- 30.7% -- active around the world. There had been 1,198,942 deaths attributable to the virus by Sunday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.6%.
