Stay safe and stay healthy - that's the message from Albany County officials this Thanksgiving.
It comes as County Executive Dan McCoy announces 100 new confirmed COVID-19 cases. He says 84 have no clear source of infection. This brings the total number of cases in just November to 1,849.
Sadly, a man in his 80's passed away overnight, bringing the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 151.
With another day with the positivity rate above 3%, it brings the county closer to the yellow zone, something McCoy is hoping people will remember when they gather today for dinner.
"That's now four days in a row that we've had percent positive averages of 3% or above, 10 days in a row qualify us for the yellow microcluster zone. What people did last night, tonight, and in the next few days will determine what our positive numbers will be moving forward into a yellow zone," said McCoy on Thursday.
Sheriff Craig Apple was also on hand for today's press conference to address questions surrounding the enforcement of the 10 person limit. He says if he or his deputies show up today, it's not because you've exceeded the limit.
"We don't have time or resources to be doing that. What this comes down to is personal accountability and we're just asking everybody, just follow the guidelines and do the right thing. If you have a housefull, if you have 15, 18, 20 people then you're going to have to deal with the consequences if someone gets sick, right? Because that one is probably a family member," said Apple.
Apple also urged people to remember that many in the community are dealing with serious issues including food insecurity, addiction, mental health issues, and overdoses.
