Drill sergeant at Joint Base San Antonio shot, killed on New Year’s Day along I-10, officials say - KSAT San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – A drill sergeant assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston has died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the JBSA.

Sergeant Jessica Mitchell, a 68E Dental Specialist, was pronounced dead at University Hospital San Antonio at around 3 a.m. on Friday, according to the JBSA.

The unit was notified by hospital personnel that Mitchell, who was on holiday leave at the time, was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were dispatched to a call for a shooting along I-10, near West Avenue about 30 minutes earlier that morning.

San Antonio Police Department and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division are still investigating the situation.

Mitchell had been assigned to MEDCoE since August 2019. Prior to that assignment, she served at a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drill Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. We are focused on supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family as well as her soldiers during this extremely difficult time,” said Maj. Gen. Dennis LeMaster, the MEDCoE Commanding General.
