Shark sightings along Cape Cod shut down several beaches - Boston Herald

poloong.blogspot.com

Numerous shark sightings near the Cape Cod shore on Thursday triggered several beaches to close for swimming, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

The conservancy’s Sharktivity App has been updating with shark sightings every 15 to 30 minutes from mid-morning to early afternoon.

Around 10 a.m., Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet was temporarily closed to swimming due to the detection of a tagged great white shark.

Then, Lecount Hollow Beach and Maguire Landing Beach in Wellfleet were both closed due to a great white shark sighting.

Other beaches that closed to swimming due to shark sightings included Nauset Public Beach in Orleans, Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, Coast Guard Beach in Truro, and White Crest Beach in Wellfleet.

The sightings come as Atlantic White Shark Conservancy researchers were on the water Thursday.

“It’s a research day!” the conservancy tweeted. “@GregSkomal tagged one white shark off of Nauset South to start off the morning. Tagging is done by Dr. Greg Skomal of @MassDMF.”

In addition to the research team on the water, there were eyes “in the sky from both spotter pilots and @MassStatePolice air crew,” tweeted MA Sharks. “That increases the chances for higher sightings #’s.”
