As school begins Monday, students logging into classrooms from the comfort of their homes will have to pay attention to what educators are calling "netiquette."
Gilchrist Elementary School recently sent an email to families with a list of "do's" and "don'ts" for students attending class in the school's Digital Academy.
Some dos include: Ensuring computers are charged, dressing appropriately, avoiding distractions, and completing work independently.
"You are not to record a lesson; your teacher will take care of that!" the school wrote.
The school also encouraged students to use features of the online platform like the "raise hand" tool to participate.
The list of don'ts includes: Lying down on a bed or couch, leaving the digital class early, eating during class and being sidetracked by distractions. The school also warned children away from abusing the chat feature in the digital classroom.
What are the consequences if students do not follow the rules?
"Online students will be subject to all of the same student code of conduct rules as in person students," Chris Petley told the Tallahassee Democrat on Friday. Petley is the spokesman for the district.
"Anything that distracts or interrupts the learning environment is subject to discipline," he said.
The School Board defines a dress code violation as anything that presents a health or safety hazard, interferes with school work, or blocks vision or restricts movement.
The policy also says the school principals are in charge of discipline at each school.
Punishment for breaking dress code increases with each infraction until an "in-school suspension," although it is unclear how virtual students would be suspended.
