CHARLESTON, W.Va. — What’s being called a peaceful protest is being organized for Monday at the state capitol by those upset the color-coded COVID-19 map will keep some school sports teams from playing this week.
The “Let Them Play” rally follows Saturday night’s map release that showed Monroe County in ‘red’ which means a total shutdown while Kanawha, Logan and Fayette counties were in the ‘orange’ category which means teams can practice but not play. Nine additional high school football opening games won’t be played because of the designation.
The rally is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
Nitro High football coach Zach Davis criticized the metrics-based map in several social media posting He called it a bad idea from the beginning in a Sunday night tweet.
3.9 miles away Poca can play but we can’t play bc we are in Kanawha County. This color map was a bad idea from the start. pic.twitter.com/hJzSPrsTBA

Gov. Jim Justice was originally supposed to have his Monday briefing at 1 p.m., an hour after the scheduled rally. Justice’s office announced later Sunday night the briefing would be held at 9:30 a.m. and then later changed it again to 12:30 p.m.
Justice will likely address the designations which are based on a rolling seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.
Justice will also likely comment on the completion of mass testing at Mount Olive State Prison where 138 inmates have tested positive for the virus.
The state recorded its first COVID-19 inmate death last week when a 40-year-old man from Wood County died. He was a federal inmate being held at the Southcentral Regional Jail.
