Every Harrison County school corporation has now had at least one COVID-19 case among its students, with more students and staff quarantining as a result.
Lanesville Community School Corp. has reported nine student COVID-19 cases total, rising from the four it reported within the first week of school.
North Harrison Community School Corp. reported its first case Aug. 12, a student at North Harrison Elementary School.
Dr. Lance Richards, superintendent of North Harrison schools, said the student only attended school for a few days before receiving a positive test result. Four students and one teacher are quarantining.
“The protocol plan worked,” Richards said.
South Harrison Community School Corp. reported three cases Aug. 10 with none of the two staff members and one student attending school since infection, according to the corporation’s social media posts.
There are currently six infected staff members and three students spread throughout multiple schools in the district: Corydon Central Junior High, Corydon Central High and South Central Elementary. A number of students and staff, including cafeteria workers, are quarantining. A whole class is quarantining in the South Central Elementary School case.
The South Harrison Community School Corp. superintendent, Dr. Mark Eastridge, said the schools are trying to inform parents and staff as quickly as possible, but he understands their frustration with slow reporting and contact tracing.
“My biggest concern is what folks do outside and bring it back into the building,” Eastridge said.
If a student reports a single COVID-19 symptom, they are to stay home or will be sent home, Eastridge wrote in a letter sent out Monday to parents.
“We are placing significant reliance that parents will carefully assess the wellbeing of all within the household,” he wrote.
The state COVID-19 daily case has begun to level off, and drop, staying in the 1,000 range and reporting about 600 new cases Monday. Harrison County has a moving average of seven cases per day.
The state total rose 7,458, to 81,847 cases in a week. There have been 67 new deaths between Aug. 12 and 17 statewide. The seven-day positivity rate is 7.8%, with the total rate at 8.8%.
The number of positive cases in Harrison County rose 47 from Aug. 12 to 17, bringing the total count to 395. Preliminary numbers show about 665 tests were performed last week, rising to 4,898 people tested. The weekly positivity rate is 9.4%, with the overall rate at 8.1%.
There was one additional death since last week, bringing the total to 26, including two presumptive deaths. Presumptive deaths are when a COVID-19 test is not administered but the physician believes the patient had the virus.
The health department will provide updates as new information becomes available.
