CLEVELAND and BRATENAHL, Ohio — More than 100 people demonstrated against President Donald Trump in protests Thursday along his motorcade route on Interstate 90 and outside of the Shoreby Club, where an evening fundraiser was held.
The No Trump in CLE protest, hosted by Action Together Lakewood Area, as well as the Cuyahoga Democratic Women’s Caucus, Indivisible CLE, District 14 Voice, Stand up to Trump CLE and Progress NEO each drew dozens of demonstrators in Cleveland. Another 100 people gathered near the Shoreby Club entrance in Bratenahl.
“There’s so many of us who are really suffering under the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus,” said Sarah Kepple, a Lakewood City Council member and representative of Action Together Lakewood Area. “People need to know that Trump is not welcome in Cleveland.”
The demonstration attracted younger activists, including a group of high school students from Lakewood who attended the protest together, holding signs that read “go vote” and “lock him up.”
“He’s doing nothing to benefit Cleveland. He’s only coming to Cleveland to benefit himself,” said Sydney Heckeler of Lakewood. “Hopefully he’ll see us and know that we’re disappointed in him and we always have been.”
At the Shoreby Club, security stood close by, guarding the entrance to the building and keeping demonstrators off the street.
Trump’s visit to Northeast Ohio included a rally with supporters at Burke Lakefront Airport and a visit to the Whirlpool Corporation Manufacturing Plant in Clyde.
