Follow Her: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know - MovieWeb

Would it be wrong to suggest that live streamers are starting to overtake traditional media? They've been the subject of brand deals, boxing matches, guest appearances, and even outside their penetration into other forms of media, their devoted audiences can't seem to get enough of these internet personalities. In fact, some would argue that the kind of parasocial relationships formed as a result of this intense attachment may even be inherently harmful. But, an upcoming psycho-sexual thriller from Quiver will focus on the opposite end of how live-streaming impacts others and how the pursuit of views may ultimately lead to one's demise.

Follow Her is one of multiple tense films focusing on internet personalities, but whereas others see them entering haunted houses or taking on dangerously stupid challenges, this tense thriller will do something particularly unique. Tackling the topic of ethics in live-streaming, a live streamer working under false pretenses will find herself fighting for survival in an isolated cabin of horrors, beholden to the mercy of a client she was originally going to film. Until the film's eventual release, this is everything we know about Follow Her.

Follow Her: The Plot

The official plot synopsis for Follow Her, provided by Quiver Distribution, is as follows:

"Jess (Dani Barker) has finally found her hook: secretly filming creepy interactions she encounters via online job listings, and using the kinks of others to fuel her streaming success. For her next episode, she’s been hired by Tom (Luke Cook) to write the ending of a screenplay in a remote, lavish cabin. Once there, the alluring self-proclaimed screenwriter hands her a script in which the two of them are the main characters. This client isn’t what he seems, and even though the money’s great... the real payment here could cost her life. Follow Her is a psycho-sexual thriller which questions the ethical boundaries of social media."

So, our protagonist isn't a goody-two-shoes. Filming people without their consent for the purpose of entertainment isn't exactly saintly. But, then again, this kind of behavior isn't exactly foreign to the world of live-streaming. Whether it's unreasonably hostile pranks, purposefully getting a rise out of others, or simply acting without regard for others, there's an audience for the kind of toxic, candid behaviors you won't find elsewhere. Follow Her recognizes this, leading Jess to take on the client at the remote cabin.

Whether you consider it as getting a taste of her own medicine or not, Jess finds herself on the opposing end of this malicious behavior, being thrust into a situation she would've had no way of preparing for. Tom, our malicious client, will seemingly force Jess to play along with the screenplay he's been working on, bringing the nightmarish scenario he's created to life along with Jess' fruitless additions to it. Not only that, but Tom also doesn't appear to be acting alone. More than a handful of faceless figures in dark masks make repeat appearances across the film's trailer, with lumber axes clutched in their gloved hands.

It'll certainly be a unique interpretation of bringing thrills and chills to the live-streaming audience. That's not to disparage films like Deadstream or Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, obviously. Follow Her seems to focus more on a genuinely overlooked portion of live-streaming that has yet to be represented in contemporary thrillers, placing a greater importance on the ethics surrounding what some are willing to do just for a few pairs of eyeballs.
