How to control wild parsnip along the White Pine Trail - The Pioneer

poloong.blogspot.com

MECOSTA COUNTY — Wild parsnip is an invasive plant that causes severe burns when people touch its sap and then are exposed to sunlight.

The burns caused by wild parsnip sap can reoccur for years, whenever a person goes out in the sun.

While wild parsnip is found throughout other parts of Michigan, it is not as widespread in this region. In recent years, wild parsnip has been spreading across Mecosta and Osceola counties.

Evidence suggests this wild parsnip originated along the White Pine Trail in Osceola County. Wild parsnip has continued to spread along the trail and into nearby road crossings. Due to its limited range to date, and the harm it can cause, North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (NCCISMA) is taking action to prevent wild parsnip from becoming widespread.

Since 2018, NCCISMA has been removing wild parsnip along the White Pine Trail. This work has been funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) through the U.S. Forest Service and the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program.

Unfortunately, NCCISMA has found that other invasive plants were taking over the areas where wild parsnip had been removed. To stop this from happening, volunteers collected native grass seeds which were later planted along the trail.

Supplemental funding provided by Cargill Corp. allowed NCCISMA to hold a volunteer event this past fall to collect the grass seed.
