STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mayor-elect Eric Adams said Sunday that when he takes office he hopes to lift the coronavirus (COVID-19) mask mandate in city schools, but that he’ll follow the advice of medical professionals.
The next city mayor, who won the general election on Tuesday, said that children not being able to see each other’s faces is making their socialization more challenging.
“I think part of the development and socialization of a child is that smile,” Adams said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union. “Not being able to see the smiles of our children — I believe [that] has a major impact.”
When asked about his successor’s comments Monday morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he also hopes to remove the mask mandate in Department of Education (DOE) schools, but that it was too soon for that action.
With the city headed into the winter, more people needing to be vaccinated, and the ever-changing nature of the virus, the current mayor said it wouldn’t yet be a responsible decision to lift the mandate.
“The day will come, and I think it will com relatively soon, but we’re not there yet,” de Blasio said.
Children in New York City aged 5 to 11 began being vaccinated against the virus on Wednesday, and so far more than 16,000 of those kids have gotten their first shots.
Adams said that he looks forward to lifting the mask mandate, but that, ultimately, he would follow the science.
“We’re going to do it with the science. That is crucial to me,” he said. “I look forward to getting rid of the masks, but it must be done with the science.”
