Erosion-control project begins along Lake Erie shoreline in Perry Township - News-Herald.com

Construction has started on an endeavor intended to fortify a severely eroded bluff behind the historic Parmly Mansion in Perry Township.

Moderalli Excavating of Poland, Ohio, will perform the armor-stone revetment project on a cliff overlooking Lake Erie in the back yard of the mansion, which also is known as the Lorimer House. The home is located within Perry Township Park, at the northern end of Perry Park Road.

Perry Township trustees recently awarded a contract to Moderalli to construct the revetment for a sum of $171,730.

This cluster of armor stones was part of the first shipment delivered on Oct. 7 for an erosion-control project that’s taking place behind the historic Parmly Mansion in Perry Township. Plans call for about 2,000 tons of armor stone to be placed on top of about 600 tons of filter stone and a geo-textile fabric to prevent additional erosion of a bluff behind the home, which has been owned by Perry Township since 2002. A revetment is a protective covering built along a coastal cliff, bank or bluff to protect it from erosion. Armor stone, which comes from quarries, is commonly used as a component in revetments.

The total price of the project, including separate engineering services provided by KS Associates of Elyria, is estimated at about $200,000. Perry Township will cover those costs with $200,000 it was awarded last year for the shoreline-improvement endeavor as part of the new Ohio capital budget bill.

Township Trustee Chairman Robert Dawson thanked state Rep. Jamie Callender, Sen. Jerry Cirino and former legislators Ron Young and John Eklund for their help in securing funding for the project.

“We have been investigating solutions for this erosion and working with our public officials for years, and Rep. Callender and Sen. Cirino were finally able to get this funded,” Dawson said. “It couldn’t have come at a better time, since erosion has continued and this mitigation will stop further erosion and even more expensive mitigation had this gone any longer.”

The revetment project, which is the third of its kind at Perry Township Park, will complete shoreline protection west of the site’s current boat ramp. Plans call for about 2,000 tons of armor stone to be placed over about 600 tons of filter stone and a geo-textile fabric to curtail additional erosion of the bluff.

It’s anticipated that the project will take a maximum of eight weeks, with a goal of completing the undertaking by Nov. 30.

“We are very excited to start this project and get this mitigation behind us,” Dawson said.

Perry Township government is spearheading the project because it has owned the Parmly Mansion and 20.5 acres of surrounding land since 2002.

Trustees have not been able to find a developer willing to buy and restore the home, which today sits vacant and dilapidated. The dwelling was built in 1834.
